Entered Academy as a sciences specialist, but switched focus when instructors noticed his natural aptitude for command. 
Took  midshipman cruise on  U.S.S. Gallant.  In 2254, volunteered for landing party sent to rescue scientists trapped in a rapidly collapsing orbital science facility damaged by meteor strikes.
First assignment after Academy was as junior helm officer on  U.S.S. Columbia.  In  2257, promoted to lieutenant and chief helmsman. Transferred to U.S.S. Ardent as second officer, 2259.
In 2261, left stranded alone on Derus VI after Ardent was destroyed in orbit by Orion pirate ambush. Other officers' escape pods were damaged by ship explosion, or landed in planet's highly volcanic regions.  Cut off from contacting Federation, Terrell spent seven years stranded on Derus VI.  He established contact and peaceful relations with indigenous population, and helped them improve their quality of life using only technology and materials they already possessed. By the time a Starfleet landing party found him, Terrell had negotiated exclusive trade and alliance rights for the Federation on Derus VI.  For his efforts, was promoted to lieutenant commander and named first officer of U.S.S. Pacifica in 2268.
Aboard Pacifica, became one of Starfleet's premier authorities on first contact, leading missions to Yuria III, Olaras Prime, Mizar IV and the Pilurran Colonies. In 2273, promoted to commander.  Promoted to captain of Pacifica following promotion of Captain Mahtani to admiral, 2275.
Pacifica returned to spacedock for extensive refitting, 2278.  In 2279, transferred to command of U.S.S. Reliant. Helped direct Starfleet operations in Mutara sector regarding Dr. Carol Marcus' civilian-run Genesis Project, 2282-85. Helped thwart efforts of dictator Khan Noonien Singh to kill Admiral James T. Kirk.
